This plan outlines Elythos LifeSciences’ commitment to operating sustainably and ethically. Our ESG strategy is integrated into our core business model to ensure long-term value creation for our stakeholders patients, healthcare providers, employees, communities, and the environment while upholding the highest standards of governance.
E: Environmental Stewardship
Objective: To minimize the environmental footprint of our operations and supply chain, contributing to a healthier planet.
Key Initiatives:
- Green Logistics & Supply Chain:
- Carbon Footprint Reduction: Partner with Fastrack Trans-Logistics to measure and reduce carbon emissions from shipping (air, sea, road). Prioritize sea freight over air freight where possible and explore carbon offset programs for essential air shipments.
- Eco-Friendly Packaging: Mandate the use of recyclable, biodegradable, or reduced packaging materials from suppliers. Eliminate single-use plastics in our own repackaging operations.
- Cold Chain Efficiency: Invest in and utilize modern, energy-efficient cold chain containers and refrigerated warehouses. Implement advanced monitoring to prevent energy waste.
- Waste Management:
- Medical Waste Compliance: Develop and enforce strict protocols for the safe disposal of expired pharmaceuticals and medical devices in partnership with licensed, certified hazardous waste management companies. Never export waste illegally.
- Circular Economy for Equipment: Establish a program for refurbishing and remarketing used medical equipment where safe and appropriate. For end-of-life equipment, partner with certified e-waste recyclers to recover valuable materials.
- Resource Efficiency:
- Operational Efficiency: Implement energy-saving measures in our offices and warehouses (LED lighting, solar power where feasible, energy-efficient appliances).
Water Management: Promote water conservation practices within our facilities.
S: Social Responsibility & Impact
Objective: To generate positive social impact by expanding healthcare access, ensuring employee well-being, and empowering communities.
Key Initiatives:
- Access to Healthcare (Core Business):
- Affordable Pricing: Develop tiered pricing models to make essential medicines and equipment more accessible to underserved public clinics and remote facilities.
- Pro-Bono & Subsidized Programs: Formalize the existing CSR approach. Allocate a fixed percentage of annual profits to donate diagnostics, PPE, and essential medicines during crises and to underserved rural clinics.
- Employee Well-being & Development:
- Fair Labor Practices: Ensure living wages, safe working conditions, and gender pay equity across all roles.
- Capacity Building: Expand beyond client training. Invest in continuous upskilling for Elythos employees—technical training for engineers, regulatory workshops, leadership development programs.
- Diversity & Inclusion (D&I): Foster a diverse and inclusive workplace, with a focus on increasing gender representation in leadership and technical roles.
- Community Health: Provide comprehensive health insurance and wellness programs for all employees and their families.
- Community Engagement & Public Health:
- Strategic NGO Partnerships: Move beyond one-off donations. Form long-term partnerships with NGOs focused on specific health issues (e.g., maternal health, malaria control, diabetes awareness), providing not just products but also logistical support and expertise.
- Health Worker Training: Scale up training initiatives for local biomedical technicians and clinicians, strengthening the entire healthcare ecosystem.
Local Sourcing: Prioritize sourcing from African-owned businesses and manufacturers where quality standards can be met, contributing to local economic development.
G: Governance & Ethics
Objective: To build a culture of integrity, transparency, and accountability through robust governance structures.
Key Initiatives:
- Anti-Corruption & Ethics:
- Zero-Tolerance Policy: Maintain and rigorously enforce a strict anti-bribery and anti-corruption policy. Mandate annual ethics training for all employees.
- Transparent Tendering: Ensure all tender processes are transparent, fair, and documented. Implement a secure channel for whistleblowing to report unethical behavior without fear of retaliation.
- Board Oversight & Structure:
- ESG Oversight: Establish a committee of the Board of Directors with explicit responsibility for overseeing ESG strategy, risk, and performance.
- Board Diversity: Commit to diversity in board composition, including members with expertise in healthcare, sustainability, and African markets.
- Supply Chain Governance:
- Robust Supplier Code of Conduct: Mandate that all suppliers adhere to a code of conduct covering human rights, labor practices, environmental standards, and ethical business practices.
- Enhanced Due Diligence: Conduct regular audits of key suppliers (especially pharmaceutical and device manufacturers) for compliance with EHS (Environment, Health, Safety), quality (GMP), and ethical standards.
- Data Security & Privacy:
- Patient Data Protection: Implement stringent protocols to protect any patient data encountered through diagnostic services or equipment connectivity, ensuring compliance with emerging data protection laws in Africa.
Implementation, Monitoring & Reporting
- ESG Committee: Form an internal ESG working group with representatives from senior management, operations, HR, and compliance to drive implementation.
- Materiality Assessment: Conduct an annual assessment to identify and prioritize the ESG issues most important to Elythos and its stakeholders.
- Set KPIs and Targets:
- Environmental: 85% of suppliers complying with green packaging policy; 120 tons of CO2 reduced; 85% of e-waste responsibly recycled.
- Social: 420 healthcare workers trained; 5% of annual profit allocated to social programs supporting rural clinics and community health drives. 42% of employees are women, with 25% in leadership roles, reflecting our commitment to diversity and inclusion.
- Governance: 95% of employees completed annual ethics and compliance training in 2024. 37 supplier audits conducted to ensure adherence to GMP, quality, and anti-corruption policies. 100% compliance with NDA, UNBS, and international procurement standards.
Annual Reporting: Publish an annual ESG or Sustainability Report to communicate progress, challenges, and goals transparently to stakeholders. This becomes a powerful tool for tenders and investor relations.
